The positions

How the three cards are laid out

Each position has its own meaning. Read the cards together, as one story that moves from left to right.

  1. Past
What still shapes your situation: a choice, an event or a feeling from before that the present grew out of.
  2. Present
Where you stand now: the energy around you today, including what you may not have put into words yet.
  3. Future
Where things are heading if nothing changes. A direction, not a fixed fate: you can still steer.
What it is

What is a Past, Present, Future reading?

The three-card reading is tarot’s classic spread. Three cards lie side by side and show a situation in motion: what led up to it, how it stands today and where the current is taking it.

It is short enough to take in at a glance and rich enough to tell a real story. That is why so many readers turn to these three cards at the start of a decision or a new chapter.

The Future card shows the direction you are already walking in, and you can still change course.

Step by step

How to do your reading

  1. Find your question

Think of the situation you want to understand. A clear topic, like a job, a friendship or a move, gives clearer cards than a vague one.

  2. Draw three cards

Tap the deck and choose one card for each position. Take your time: there is no wrong card to pick.

  3. Read the arc

Turn the cards over and read them as a line. How does the first card lead to the second, and the second to the third?

How it works

How does the three-card spread work?

Each position tells part of the story. The first card shows what still echoes from the past, the second the energy of the present, the third the most likely next step.

The real depth lies in how the cards speak to each other. A hopeful Future card after a heavy Past card tells a different story than the same card after an easy start, and your reading takes all three cards and their positions into account.

The cards are drawn at random from a 78-card deck in the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition, and about three in ten land reversed. Your reading is then written with the help of AI from the cards and their positions.

Good moments

When to use it

It goes deeper than the quick Card of the Day and still takes only a few minutes, so it suits most everyday questions:

  • Understanding a situation. You want to see how something developed, not just how it looks today.
  • Before a decision. You want a sense of where the current path leads before you choose.
  • After a change. A move, a breakup or a new job, and you want to see the bigger picture.
  • A regular check-in. Once a week or once a month, to notice how things are moving.
Reading the cards

How to read your three cards

The most helpful reading takes all three cards seriously and looks for the thread between them.

What helps
  • Read the three cards as one story, from left to right.
  • Notice what surprises you. That is often where the message is.
  • Treat the Future card as a direction you can still change.
Better to avoid
  • Reading the Future card as a fixed fate.
  • Drawing again right away because you dislike a card.
  • Using the cards in place of medical, legal or financial advice.
Reversed cards

What does a reversed card mean?

A card that lands upside down is called reversed. It does not simply turn the meaning into its opposite. More often it shows the same theme in a blocked, delayed or inward form: energy that is held back, or a lesson that is still being learned.

Your reading tells you when a card is reversed and what that changes. Tap any card after it is turned to see its keywords and its short meaning, upright or reversed.

Questions about the free tarot reading

Is this tarot reading really free?

Yes. You can draw three readings a day for free, with no account, no payment and no trial. The Yes or No Tarot is free without any limit.

Who writes my reading?

The cards are drawn at random. The text that explains them is written with the help of AI, guided by the traditional meanings of the cards and the positions they fall in.

Fortuna is the voice of this site, not a person, and no human reads your cards. Take your reading as food for thought and entertainment, not as advice on health, legal or money matters.

Do I need to type my question?

No. Keep your question or situation in mind while you draw. The reading is written from your cards and their positions, so it works for any topic and you do not have to share anything personal.

Can the cards predict my future?

Tarot works best as a mirror, not as a forecast. The Future card shows where things are heading if nothing changes, and you can always change course.

Use your reading for reflection and entertainment, and do not base important health, legal or money decisions on it.

How often should I ask about the same situation?

Give a reading some time to unfold. Asking the same question again right away usually brings confusion rather than clarity. For an ongoing situation, once a week is a good rhythm.

Is my reading saved?

Your reading is not saved in a database or a reading history on Dear Fortuna. To keep the service working, the request and the answer are kept for up to 30 days in our AI monitoring, and our AI provider, OpenAI, may keep them for up to 30 days to check for misuse. Details are in our privacy policy.

You never type your name or your question. Once you leave or reload the page, you cannot open the reading again, so copy the text or take a screenshot if you want to keep it.

Why can I only draw three readings a day?

Each reading is written fresh for your cards, which takes real computing work. The daily limit keeps the readings free for everyone. The three readings are shared by all three AI spreads.

The count is kept per internet connection, so people who share one, such as a household, also share their three readings. The count starts fresh at midnight UTC, which is evening in the US: 8 PM Eastern during daylight saving time, 7 PM in winter.
