DearFortuna

About

About Dear Fortuna.

Dear Fortuna is a free site for daily horoscopes, tarot readings and a fortune teller, written for English readers. This page tells you who is behind it and, just as important, how every reading is made.

Behind the site

A small, independent site from Vienna

Dear Fortuna is run by Sirio Sperandio in Vienna, Austria, who also runs MeinOrakel, a German website for horoscopes, tarot and oracles. Dear Fortuna is its English sister: the same technology and the same care, with its own pages written for English readers.

There are no ads here, nothing to buy and no account to create.

The voice of the site

Fortuna is not a person

Fortuna is named after the Roman goddess of luck and fortune. On this site she is the voice that answers your questions, not a real fortune teller. Her answers, like the tarot readings and the horoscopes, are written by an AI model, and we say so wherever she speaks.

How readings are made

You should know what you are reading. Here is how each part of the site works.

Horoscopes

Every horoscope starts with astronomy. Our software calculates where the Sun, the Moon and the planets stand, using the Swiss Ephemeris, a widely used astronomical library. For a daily horoscope it works out what happens in the sky over the day in New York: the Moon's sign and when it changes, the Moon's phase, the angles between the planets (aspects), and planets that change sign or appear to stand still and turn around.

For each zodiac sign, these events are read through the sign's houses and put in order of importance. An AI model then writes the horoscope from these facts. The scores from one to five for areas such as love, career and luck are calculated by code, not chosen by the AI. For the daily horoscope, the lucky number and the lucky color are set by code too, with a fixed rule based on traditional numerology; for the weekly, monthly and yearly horoscopes the AI picks them. Either way, think of them as play.

Before a daily horoscope is published, code checks a few things. The best time of day it suggests must fit the events calculated for that day. The text must not name planets, use technical terms or give clock times, it must place the Moon in the right sign, and its headline must not repeat a recent one or another sign's headline that day. Weekly, monthly and yearly horoscopes pass similar checks. If a check fails, the text is written once more with the problem pointed out. If the second version still fails, a best time that does not fit is removed; anything else is published and logged for us to review.

Weekly and monthly horoscopes are written from the sky at the start of the period and the events calculated for it. The best days of a week are worked out by code from the sign's daily scores. The yearly horoscope is written from the year's big movements: the slow planets changing signs, the retrograde periods and the eclipses.

Tarot readings

The cards are drawn at random, and some come up reversed. An AI model then writes the reading from the cards and their places in the spread. Each reading is written fresh for you.

Ask Fortuna

Your question goes to an AI model, which answers as Fortuna in a few sentences. It is instructed to speak of possibilities rather than fixed fate, never to give medical, legal or financial instructions, and to point to help if a question sounds like a crisis.

If the AI service is not available, the tarot readings, Ask Fortuna, the dream interpretation and the wheel show a short, general prewritten message instead, with a note that says so.

Dream interpretation

Your description goes to an AI model, which reads it as Fortuna in a few sentences. It is instructed to offer possible meanings rather than fixed ones, never to treat a dream as a diagnosis, and to suggest talking to someone you trust or a professional when a dream sounds distressing.

Yes or no tarot

No AI is used when you draw. The card is drawn in your browser, and the answer (yes, no or not yet) and its short meaning come from a fixed table of all 78 cards, upright and reversed, prepared in advance with the help of AI, following common tarot practice.

Yes or no wheel

The wheel turns in your browser with fixed odds: 40 percent yes, 40 percent no and 20 percent maybe. No AI decides the answer. Without a question, the short message comes from a set prepared in advance with the help of AI, and nothing goes to our backend or to an AI provider. If you type a question, it goes with the wheel’s answer to an AI model, which writes Fortuna’s short personal answer. It is instructed to stay with the wheel’s answer, to speak of possibilities and never to give medical, legal or financial instructions.

Card meaning pages

The pages on the meaning of each card were prepared in advance with the help of AI, following common tarot practice.

What we keep

There are no accounts. Your reading is not saved in a database or a reading history on Dear Fortuna. To keep the service working, the request and the answer are kept for up to 30 days in our AI monitoring, and our AI provider, OpenAI, may keep them for up to 30 days to check for misuse. Details are in our privacy policy.

Written with the help of AI, for reflection and entertainment. It is not medical, legal or financial advice. How readings are made

Please keep in mind

Horoscopes, tarot, dream readings, the yes or no wheel and Fortuna’s answers are for reflection and entertainment. No reading can see the future, and none of it replaces medical, psychological, legal or financial advice. If you are going through something difficult, please talk to someone you trust or to a professional. The decisions about your life are always yours.

Questions and answers

Is Dear Fortuna really free?
Yes. Every horoscope and every reading is free. The tarot readings and Fortuna's answers have a small daily limit (currently 3 tarot readings and 10 questions a day), because each one is written by an AI model and costs us money to make.
Do I need to sign up?
No. There are no accounts on Dear Fortuna, and you never need to give a name or an email address.
Can a reading predict the future?
No. Astrology and tarot are not sciences, and we do not treat them as predictions. A reading can help you look at a question from a new side, but what you make of it is up to you.
When does a new day begin?
Dear Fortuna follows New York time, so "today" begins at midnight Eastern Time. The daily limits start fresh at midnight UTC, which is the evening before in the US.
